She plays a chubby girl named Kate in the show who is struggling to lose weight. However, many years ago the 36 year old This is Us star had a major panic attack and had to lose weight. She had gained 100 pounds after chronic depression just before landing a role in the show ‘American Horror Story: Freakshow‘. It was her 30th birthday and she was feeling extremely depressed. She suddenly had a severe panic attack and had to check herself into a hospital. She skipped her own 30th birthday party and got admitted in a hospital instead. Chrissy Metz – Early Life & Career
Chrissy Metz was born on September 29, 1980. She grew up in Homestead, Florida. A part of her childhood was also spent in Japan while her father was in the U.S Navy. She was always a chubby kid. She moved to LA to find work in the TV & film industry in 2004. She landed some roles in TV shows as a guest appearance in couple of episodes. She had to go through a lot of struggle before she could land a proper role in a TV show. It is also known that she was completely broke and had to survive on Ramen for months. During 2011-2012, she faced depression due to not getting enough work in the acting field. She had very less money and resources required to survive in Los Angeles. She then got a role in American Horror Story: Freak Show. However, when that show ended she felt lost again. About this incident, Chrissy told Glamour Magazine: “I’d wanted the role of Ima [Barbara] Wiggles desperately, and after I got it, I thought, OK, awesome, this is a jumping board for my career. But when it wrapped, there was … nothing.” At this point in time, she felt more depressed than ever before. She had almost decided to head back to her home in Florida when her mother told her that she could live in Florida, be miserable and not do what she wants to do. But if she lived in LA, she’d still be miserable but she can do whatever she wants to do.
Chrissy told Glamour magazine “I kept auditioning, with no savings and no money, credit card debt gaining interest. I went on unemployment. I bought ramen noodles at dollar stores. I never had to — God forbid — live on the streets; I moved in with a roommate who told me, ‘Stay with me until you can afford rent. Don’t give up'”
Her moment of glory arrived when she signed up for This is Us. Her role in the show is about an over weight woman who is trying to lose weight. Chrissy says she could relate to the character Kate because she is always trying to lose weight.
Losing 100 Pounds in Five Months
When Chrissy was struck with a panic attack on her 30th birthday, she realised that she desperately needed to lose weight. She realised that being over-weight was not only making her look shabby but also taking a toll on her health.
I was so gung-ho, I lost 100 lbs. in less than five months. All I did was eat a 2,000-calorie diet and walk 20 minutes a day.

She realised that this wasn’t really a physical thing. It was a spiritual/soul/body thing that she needed to accomplish. She started taking care of her diet and workout from then.

Chrissy Metz started avoiding extra calories in her diet do lose weight. She concentrated on consuming only 2,000 calories in a day and not more than that. She avoided oily food items that carried unnecessary calories. She says that liquid calories are the worst. She stopped drinking cola, sodas and shakes. All aerated drinks were replaced with natural cold drinks like lime water or fresh fruit juices with no added sugar. She stopped eating junk food and ate a lot of protein rich items. Avoiding the excessive oil and carbs helped her to lose 100 pounds within five months.

Due to her excessive weight, heavy workout wasn’t immediately feasible for Chrissy. She started her routine with simply taking a 20 minute walk every day. She says that she hadn’t done any notable physical activity in years thus even starting to take a walk helped her in losing weight. When the walk started showing effects, she started running too. Within 5 months, the weight just started melting off.
